Peter Tropper, Consultant

Peter Tropper is a renowned expert in emerging markets private equity with more than 35 years of investment and advisory experience in 110 countries in over 200 funds. An independent consultant since 2014, Peter advises fund managers and institutional investors on private equity fund formation and governance issues. He also sits on several advisory committees of private equity funds in frontier markets.

Peter teaches professional development programs for fund managers and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. Since 2016, Peter has been a lecturer at The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School on private equity in emerging markets.

A recognized leader in the field, Peter has served as the Senior Advisor to the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association and as well as the chair of its Frontier Markets Council.

Peter has provided advice and training on Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s equity strategy and implementation including drafting the text of the strategy and advising on the implementation of issues related to fund selection and portfolio management. From 2014-2019, Peter served as the IFC’s representative on the Advisory Committee for funds including BO2 in Nepal, the West Africa Ventures Fund, Central Africa SME Fund and the SEAF Bangladesh Ventures Fund.

Most of Peter’s career was spent at the International Finance Corporation. In his final role as Chief Investment Officer in IFC’s Private Equity Group, Peter set up the SME Venture programs for funds that invest in small enterprises in frontier markets. Peter oversaw more than 200 funds across a portfolio of more than $3.5 billion with particular responsibility for funds in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America.

Peter graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Political science from Yale University and has a M.A. in Western Europe, Economics, and Law and Organizations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an MBA in Finance from the University of Maryland.
